Mogadishu 13, July, 2023, the Cabinet of the Federal Government of Somalia has taken in an unprecedented move to transform the energy sector and officially approved and endorsed the establishment of the National Electricity Authority (NEA). This marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to regulate, transform and stabilize the electricity industry, which is pivotal for economic growth and sustainable development.

During a recent cabinet session, the Minister of Energy and Water Resources presented an in-depth overview of the experiences and qualifications of the newly appointed Director General, Deputy Director General, and the other board members of the National Electricity Authority. Each member has been selected based on a rigorous criteria emphasizing expertise in energy management, regulation, and policy development, ensuring that the authority is governed by a team capable of steering the nation towards an era of energy independence and sustainability.

The Director General, Mr. Abdullahi Ahmed Dayib brings over decade of experience in the energy sector, having worked with international energy agencies and private sector entities to improve energy access and infrastructure. The Deputy Director General, [Insert Name], is noted for Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim Muus robust background in regulatory frameworks and has been instrumental in the energy sector.

The NEA board comprises individuals with a diverse array of skills in energy, economy, legal, engineering, and environmental sustainability, each member bringing a wealth of knowledge and a shared commitment to the progress of Somalia’s energy sector.

The establishment of the NEA signifies a profound advancement of electricity industry in. The authority is mandated to provide licensing, oversee tariffs, and regulate the electricity industry comprehensively. This includes ensuring that energy generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption are carried out efficiently, sustainably, and at fair pricing to protect consumers and support the business sector.

The Minister of Energy and Water Resources of federal government of Somalia, H.E. Jama Taqal Abbas in a statement, expressed profound gratitude to the cabinet members for their support in approving and endorsing this importan regulatory body. “The NEA will serve as the cornerstone for a stable and transparent energy market, attracting investment, fostering competition, and guaranteeing that our citizens have access to reliable and affordable electricity,” said the Minister.

The Minister also highlighted that the NEA will be a key player in implementing the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources’ strategy to increase access to electricity throughout Somalia, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The Federal Government of Somalia is confident that the establishment of the NEA will foster a more structured electricity market, encourage private sector participation, and ensure that the energy needs of Somalia’s growing economy and population are met in a responsible and sustainable manner.
