The Hydrometeorological Department is one of the most critical and important departments of MoEWR and is responsible for provision of nationwide Hydrometeorological services; information to decision makers about the status of water resources of Somalia based on hydrological monitoring and analysis including drought monitoring and outlooks, flood forecasting and warnings; monitoring weather and collecting Hydromet data; providing forecasts and early warnings; archiving and providing climate and weather data; and collection and analysis of hydrological data and forecast of floods, droughts and cyclones.

The department is tasked with the assessment, monitoring, and management of water resources, and it plays a crucial role in the prediction and warning of hydro-meteorological hazards. By integrating science and technology in hydrology and meteorology, the department supports the country's development, ensuring water security, and resilience to climate variability and change.

The vision of the Hydro-Metrology Department is to achieve a state of hydro-metrological excellence where the people of Somalia benefit from a comprehensive understanding and sustainable management of their water and climate resources, fostering a harmonious balance between natural ecosystems and human development.

Mission

To provide accurate, timely, and actionable hydro-metrological information to the Somali people and stakeholders to safeguard lives, property, and the environment. To develop and implement robust policies that ensure the sustainable and equitable use of water resources, enhance climate resilience, and support the nation’s socio-economic development.
